Q. Recommendation for Gallery s for Selling Antiques and Antiquities? I m looking for a reputable gallery to sell my mother-in-law s antiques and antiquities. She has a wide collection of pieces including statues and sculptures of marble, bisque, gold, and bronze from all over the world. Once piece is from between 300 and 400 B.C. and it s marble in very good condition. can you translate this short story edgar allen poe?
Q. MISERY is manifold. The wretchedness of earth is multiform. Overreaching the wide horizon as the rainbow, its hues are as various as the hues of that arch, --as distinct too, yet as intimately blended. Overreaching the wide horizon as the rainbow! How is it that from beauty I have derived a type of unloveliness? --from the covenant of peace a simile of sorrow? But as, in ethics, evil is a consequence of good, so, in fact, out of joy is sorrow born. Either the memory of past bliss is the anguish of to-day, or the agonies which are have their origin in the ecstasies which might have been. My baptismal name is Egaeus; that of my family I will not mention. Yet there are no towers in the land more time-honored than my gloomy, gray, hereditary… [cont.]

A. I love that story... If you really mean to translate it into a different language, wrong section. If you want us to explain what it means, well, here you go. The story is about a monomaniac guy who falls in love with his cousin Berenice. Berenice later comes down with an illness which leaves her disfigured and sometimes, she appears to be dead (not moving, not breathing, etc). This is the reason she is buried alive. Egaeus becomes obsessed with her teeth which are the only things left on her not disfigured. He is later informed that she had died and been buried. One night, Egaeus is told that Berenice's grave was dug up and she was found alive. Egaeus is covered in mud and blood. He picks up a box in his room (he had been afraid of… [cont.]

Ideas for 3 week trip?
Q. Background: my husband and I both started businesses this year and we have worked really hard, while having to be apart much of the time. His involves lots of travel, at least for this first year. I had just asked today about a special gift for him and like other things in our marriage, we're on the same page. He called from the airport and said he is taking 3 weeks off in December and to start planning a trip. His gift to me. Specifics: budget is $30,000. I don't want to be gone over Christmas Eve or day so it will have to be the first 3 weeks of December. Things we like to do: museums, art galleries, anything historical, antique and local art/crafts shopping, dining out, theater, beaches but not to just lay at the beach, water… [cont.]

Q. Never dealt with them and have a few pieces of antique furniture I am interested in them selling for me? I live out of state. Any negative remarks concerning their honesty and reputation? Can they be trusted?

A. My brother lives near there and he has bought a few pieces there. He felt he paid too much for one piece, but many dealers go and bid the price up. Since you will have to travel to deliver the furniture, you might as well try to sell them on E-bay. At least you will have some control over the opening bit...length of time etc.

Auctioneer Misrepresentation - Can anything be done?
Q. This fall, my family had made arrangements with an auctioneer to sell a bunch of household goods, antiques, and restaurant equipment. The company transported the items from our home to his gallery, charging us fees for hauling the items AND commission. The personal items and restaurant equipment were sold at separate auctions in October. We were told that it would take less than three weeks to receive checks for our items. We knew we were in trouble when our items were not advertised. After much persistance, we finally got our checks December 21st. We were shocked by the low selling amounts and high rates. We were promised advertising and a fair auction, but we feel quite cheated. Ex-They spent hours ($55/hr.) removing a pizza oven which… [cont.]

A. I hate to say this but that is both the downside (your end) and the up side (the buyers end) of the entire auction process! People attend auctions with the hope of getting away with expensive items for close to nothing. I have done it myself a thousand times and you story is not the first time I ever stopped to wonder how badly the person that sold items feels afterward. I had a Rookwood Candlestick from the early 1900's get thrown into a box lot with a bunch of garbage that sold for $10.00 total. The candlestick alone was worth at least a few hundred dollars... So I know how it feels to get beat... That was the error of the person that staged and evaluated the items. But I signed an agreement that stated how I understood the… [cont.]

How can I clean an antique European poster?
Q. I've come across a very old and brittle European poster. It is similar to those antique alcohol printings ( The only difference is that this is of a Spanish bullfighter and bull. The paper again is very brittle. The majority of the printing/poster is white and has yellowed severely. Additionally, it's covered with a thick layer of dust (I found it in someone's basement). Historical places like Boston and Plymouth Rock. I would like to know about good wineries, brewerys, restaurants. I love art galleries, festivals, museums...but I dont want to be surrounded by children. Im NOT interested in: swimming/ocean, lighthouses, covered bridges, antique shops or zoos. Can anyone offer advice on moving an antique dresser w/ mirror?
Q. Okay, this will probably come off as a little odd, but I really need some advice. I have a massive marble-top dresser. It's an antique, appx. 1840ish, and is part of a bedroom set my mother inherited from my gran. It's huge. I'd say eight-feet-tall assembled (conservatively -- it dwarfs the eleven foot ceilings where it's housed), about five feet wide. I don't have a picture, but it's roughly approximate to this: -- the difference being the mirror has solid carved wood on either side of it, not simply "dips." This is one heavy sucker. My mum is moving things out of her bedroom in order to put down new floorboards, and I had one of the worst experiences of my life today trying to -- with my mother and my brother -- balance the… [cont.]

A. Hi Kathy! Here are bunches of auction sales results and pre-sale estimates with images of items that sold. You could sign on to one of these services for a nominal fee to do some more research yourself. It's always a wise idea to know what you have but I think, however, your best route is to simply contact one of the fine auction houses (there are a number of them listed below) that have sold his works in the past as they would be able to determine its uniqueness, as well its authenticity. Appraising is not just about numbers but about having handled and viewed a multitude of art and having an experienced eye. I hope that this helps and I wish you great luck! Local photographer needing a bit of help?
Q. K, so I had a wonderful idea, as I'm trying to make money without actually doing any work. I'm a fairly good photographer, people say they're at least good enough to sell as stock photos, some to hang up. The Dairy Queen in my town has a bunch of pictures hanging on the walls by a local photographer, which gave me the idea, not to brag... but I'm better than that photographer. Anyway, I figure that I can go around and ask if the restaurants and such would like to hang my photos up on their walls, I hear people do this all the time. There's only one gallery in my town, and it's not really for photography work, only paintings and drawings. We do have a booth in an antique mall, but it's a small thing in the back of the store, so yeah... [cont.]

A. "I'm trying to make money without actually doing any work." Yeah wouldn't we all. "I'm a fairly good photographer," Fairly good won't normally cut it if you are trying to sell your work. You can try selling direct to the store for onward sale by them. Unlikely to happen though. You can approach stores or restaurants and ask them to give you display space - and to handle the sales (if any). For this you will have to pay them a commission.
