Race and ethnicity in the United States Census, as defined by the United States Census Bureau and the Federal Office of Management and Budget (OMB), are self-identification data items in which residents choose the race or races with which they most closely identify, and indicate whether or not they are of Hispanic or Latino origin (ethnicity).

The racial categories represent a social-political construct designed for the race or races that respondents consider themselves to be and "generally reflect a social definition of race recognized in this country." The OMB defines the concept of race as outlined for the US Census as not "scientific or anthropological" and takes into account "social and cultural characteristics as well as ancestry" using "appropriate scientific methodologies" but not "primarily biological or genetic in reference."

Race and ethnicity are considered separate and distinct identities, with Hispanic or Latino origin asked as a separate question. Thus, in addition to their race or races, all respondents are categorized by membership in one of two ethnicities, which are "Hispanic or Latino" and "Not Hispanic or Latino". In 1997, OMB issued a Federal Register Notice which provided revised racial and ethnic definitions.

Why is always blacks and hispanics who complain about not being represented enough in the media and pop cultur
Q. e when they are more represented than Asians, Native-Americans, or Middle Easterners? Have you noticed the black population and Hispanic populations is rapidly and steadily consistently increasing in the U.S. and many other places so you guys are not actually a minority anymore? The U.S. census predicts in 50 years from now, the minority will be whites and the majority hispanic. And yet you guys (not all but many) always complain about not being represented enough in the media and that's why you want to continue your magazines and channels, etc. Personally I think it's unfair that you guys get your own magazines and channels and yet you are still represented in the mainstream, why is it you get to have your cake and eat it too? I think if… [cont.]

A. No ethnic group deserves their own t.v. channel, radio stations, magazines, or history months. Minorities shouldn't be allowed to have their own specific things designed for their interests. And I don't care who complains. Let them complain.

Are there Multiracial Communities out there too?
Q. I know there seem to be all these different communities of people for different situations: African-American community (which seems to be the most vocal or at least getting the most media attention), Latin American community, Asian American community, and American Indians tribes making decent livings with their casinos but I haven't seen anything in the media about multiracial communities (people of more than one cultural heritage) getting together and forming groups to focus on celebration of all cultures and languages (particularly with the slow transformation of the U.S. Census to reflect a changing national population). It would be cool if Tiger Woods, Naomi Campbell, Keanu Reeves, and others toook to helping establish Blended… [cont.]

A. I agree with you 100%. But you know what, not too many people WILL agree with you. I have a multiracial family and I live in multiracial country - Canada. We are on the West Coast, and every city out here, that we have connections, with all have multiracial communities. Everybody gets on with each other and very rarely do you hear news of there being trouble because of race. Of course, just as in every other city in the world, there are those who do not want to enjoy the multiracial togetherness, because then it would not go along with the bigotry and racial hatred that they are trying to keep entact. When I walk down the road in this community I pass East Indian families, Black families, Asian families and of course, white… [cont.]

Biologically Speaking, Race Doesn't Exist WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THIS INTERESTING?
Q. Dr. Venter s statements were emphatically backed by Dr. Joseph L. Graves Jr., author of The Emperor s New Clothes: Biological Theories of Race at Millennium," in a recent New York Times interview. "Possibly only six genes determine the color of a person s skin," Graves, a professor of evolutionary biology and African-American Studies at Arizona University, said in the Times interview. Six genes, out of the 30,000 to 40,000 genes that make us human, determine race. Graves further asserted what genome researches have been uncovering over several years as the mapping project has wound down: as far as biology is concerned, race doesn t exist. Black, white, Asian all are artificial, really. A black man and a white man from Manhattan, for… [cont.]

A. Actually, race does exist on the biological level. That is why you can take a cell sample from any individual, and be able to tell that person's race from that sample. Certain individuals have an agenda to push, so they advocate pseudoscience like the "no such thing as race" theory. Just take a look at some of the bullcrap written there. It talks about race being defined as skin color. Well race is not only skin color. If that were the case, then the KKK would allow albino blacks into their ranks, which they don't. Race is much more than skin color. Also, the part saying a black man from Manhattan is probably more genetically similar to a white man than he is to a black man from Nigeria only proves that the way we label race may not be… [cont.]
