Texas German is a dialect of the German language that is spoken by descendants of German immigrants who settled in the Texas Hill Country region in the mid-19th century. These immigrants founded the towns of New Braunfels, Fredericksburg, Boerne, Schulenburg, Weimar, and Comfort. Most German Texans continued to speak German in their homes and communities, but were required to learn English when Texas education rules mandated English-only instruction during and after World War I. Due to the growth of these communities and cultural bias during World War I and World War II, Texas German speakers drifted towards English, and few passed the language to their descendants. The dialect is near extinction, as it is now spoken almost exclusively by a few elderly German Texans. Currently, Dr. Hans Boas at the University of Texas is recording and studying the dialect, building on research originally performed by Glenn Gilbert in the 1960s. From Wikipedia under the

Are there any young people of full blood german heritage in san antonio and new braunfels texas? Asked by Emily J - Fri Jun 26 21:53:09 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. Very likely! My husband is from Fredericksburg, Texas. His ancestors came from Germany in the 1840s, went straight to Fredericksburg, stayed there and married the neighbors, who were all from Germany. After over 160 years of United States residency by his family, my husband can still be considered of full-blooded German heritage. If it can be said of someone from Fredericksburg, then I have no doubt that it can also be said for some folks in the places you mention. P. S. My father can also be considered full-blooded German! It housed about 4800 German soldiers, most of them captured from Rommel's Afrika Corps in North Africa (the campaign from the first part of the movie PATTON). The camp was nicknamed "The Fritz Ritz" (Fritz is a common nickname in Germany and the Ritz is a luxury hotel). From the book n a z i p r i s o n e r s o f w a r i n a m e r i c a by Arnold Krammer (which you should get from your local library- if they don't have it, ask them to order it through Interlibrary Loan- it's free of charge and they'll know what you're talking about): "At Camp Hearne, Texas, the Germans painstakingly constructed concrete replicas of old German castles - waist high - down to the… [cont.] Answered by Jonathan D - Fri Oct 12 17:18:40 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Texas German"
